Grace is an Inquirer

"While recognizing the importance of knowledge, concepts and skills, these alone do not make an internationally minded person. It is vital that there is also focus on development of personal attributes towards people, towards the environment and towards learning, attitudes that contribute to well-being of the individual and of the group. By deciding that the attitudes need to be an essential part of the programme, the PYP is making a commitment to a values-laden curriculum." Making the PYP Happen
Inquirers display their curiosity by asking questions about the world. They develop the skills they need for inquiry and cultivate a love for learning throughout their lives.

Grace sees herself as an inquirer because she enjoys finding out new things and she asks questions about the things she wants to know.

Shape Play

During our UOI we discovered that shapes are an integral part of the world around us. We noticed them on our class trip and we took photographs of the shapes we could spot around the school.

From this we created a comprehensive list of the shapes we knew and experimented with making shapes as well as using shapes to create different structures (such as buildings, landscapes etc.) using a range of materials including: paints, geo boards, peg boards, coloured paper, foam shapes, fabrics, iPads & more!

Here is the painting that Grace has chosen to display on her e-portfolio. She says she chose this piece of work because she "painted a triangle, square, circle and a rectangle and a circle. The bottom is a pattern because it goes rectangle, circle, rectangle."

Learning about Patterns

Patterns are everywhere! We have been noticing & exploring patterns in our everyday lives as well as creating some patterns of our own. Grace chose to share a video about a pattern detective that she enjoys as a sample of her best work because "He (the detective) doesn't know who made the pattern. But I know! I like being a pattern detective."

How & Why We Move

We have been reflecting on all of the experiences we have had as a part of our 'How We Organise Ourselves' unit. To prompt some discussion about how we move and why, Ms. Karla, Ms. Alison & Mr. Nathan created a play area full of fun equipment use. Students were able to play freely, then discussed how and why they were moving in different ways with a teacher. Here is Grace's movement conference:

Independent Reading

02/27/2014

Independent reading is one of the ways we practise and develop our emergent reading skills. We are learning how books work, how to interpret the pictures in a story and to make lots of connections between our experiences and what we have read. During independent reading time or our free play, we are able to choose if we want to read with a friend or by ourselves.  We like to retell the stories we know or read stories we have written together as a class.

Grace loves to read and has lots of emergent reading skills. She knows how books and words work, has a good knowledge of the sounds that letters make and uses the pictures to interpret the words in the story. Discussing what the story is about helps her to understand what she has read.
